much it will cost to build. It's easier than you think and a lot of fun.

| Visualize
the finished product and start planning what you need. After digging out
the hole to be used for your pond you will want to place a 1" layer
of Brick Sand in the bottom and up the sides of your pond before placing
fabric cloth to protect and cushion the liner from the native sub-soil.
Filter cloth is a felt like material in white or black as shown on the top
right roll. Next comes the pond liner which is available in 10, 15, 20 or
25 foot widths in rolls up to 100' long. We recommend 45Mil EPDM rubber
liner for it's strength, flexibility and long term duration. Up to 25
years versus vinyl or plastic which won't last nearly as long. It's fish
friendly too! Rubber liner is usually folded into 5' widths on the roll as
shown on the bottom two rolls above. |
| For a
small pond you might decide that just a small fountain sprinkler sitting
in the pond is all you require for water movement. Notice that these
Cyprio pumps have both a flow control and built in tee which can be used
to operate a small statuary or water feature. |
 |
 |
If you
plan on having a waterfall feature, it is advisable to use a pump which
can handle the amount of water flow you will desire including the things
that you don't think about up front. New hoses and pumps as you see them
demonstrated in a store always seem to have wonderful flow - until you get
them home and use them for 3 or 4 months. The hoses will get a film of
algae on the inside, the pumps will always have some degree of dirt or
blockage which will reduce the flow. Yes you are supposed to keep the pump
clean at all times but we all know that doesn't happen. No excuse though
if you burn out the pump because there was NO water flow. The
manufacturers know better!
The farther and higher the pump has to push
the water the less pressure you end up with. A 1740 gallon per hour pump
(shown here) has a maximum head of 20'. That means if you were to connect
a hose on this pump and run it straight up for 20' you would get virtually
no water coming out the top. But at 5' you would get about 1200 gallons
per hour. |
| Vinyl
Tubing is used to connect pumps to water features or even to a waterfall.
It is available in standard sizes
including
3/8"
1/2"
3/4"
1"
1-1/8"
1-1/4"
We also carry fittings, adapters, reducers and flow controls. |

Non-Kink
tubing is more expensive than plain vinyl tubing but has some distinct
advantages. It won't easily kink or crush, which means you can pile dirt
and and rock (within reason) on top of it without having it get crushed
flat. This is very good for running from the main pump to the waterfall
feature. |
| A
Bio-filter is a good method of filtering your pond using mother nature.
Water enters through the bottom from a pump in the pond. The container is
filled with lava rock, pebbles or bio-balls and topped off with plants all
of which help strain and clean the water as it slowly re-circulates back
into the pond over the lip. They are 34" across and 11" deep. |
 |
 |
Another
method of filtering is using a sealed pressurized filter which is placed
in the ground just outside of your pond. They provide full mechanical and
biological filtration. They are also available with an internal UV
(Ultra-Violet) lamp assembly which helps to reduce the levels of algae in
the water. They are available in sizes to handle 250, 500 and 1000 gallon
ponds. |
| A low
voltage light can be placed in the water for great night lighting effect.
Each lamp comes with 4 colored lenses (blue, green, yellow and red) or can
be used as a spotlight in natural. |
