Install Roman Stack

INSTALLING ROMAN STACK - Simple, Affordable, Beautiful! Pictures and information courtesy of Unilocktm

There are only two units required to build your planter or garden wall. Notice that some of the copings (when turned upside down) have a splitting groove which can be used for making corner pieces. If corners are not required use a chisel to break out the center nub and use as a coping piece.
Straight walls can be made using the 8" side as the face and leaving a gap in the back. This requires 4.8 pieces per face foot.

Remember to use filter cloth or High Performance Paver Bedding fill behind the wall to prevent soil seepage.

Alternating the pieces back and forth (8" face beside a 6" face) requires 5.4 pieces per face foot.
Circles can be created with a minimum inside radius of 21" (550mm) and a outside radius of 29" (750mm)
The split coping piece is used to create a 90 degree corner and is glued into place using landscape adhesive. The second layer alternates the corner direction and is also glued into place.
Both full circles, half circles and curved serpentine walls can easily be created.

Excavate (approx. 6" deep x 12" wide) where planter blocks will be installed.
Place 3" gravel in trench and compact.
Level the blocks from left to right and front to back.
Install entire perimeter stepping up blocks where grade goes up.
Install coping on last row and glue using Landscape adhesive.
Backfill inside of planter with gravel. (see cross section below)
Place filter cloth, add topsoil, and plant!
Filter Cloth is used to prevent the soil from escaping past the Roman Stack blocks. (It is a felt like material) Notice the first block is placed partially below grade to prevent movement from frost.
