Please note that a 1" bedding course is sufficient, however depending on the diameter of the pipe being used for screeding, use whatever is appropriate for you. Metal Fence rails often are available in 1-1/2", square post is often 1" and electrical metal conduit is 1" and all can be used effectively for screeding.

The material used for the bedding course should be concrete sand or screenings depending upon your proficiency in levelling the area. Screenings on a Granular base requires very accurate screeding.

Also remember, that it is very important to provide drainage slope away from the house of at least 1/4" per foot which is the equivalent of 1" for every 4' (or 2% slope).

When using High Performance Paver Bedding (HPB) as the major base, no sand base is required but it is very important that the material be contained around the perimeter. HPB is also the best product to use for filling in steps, backfilling walls and using where drainage is required.

Save Time and Money - use High Performance Paver Bedding instead of a granular base and sand bedding layer. HPB compacts to 93% on initial installation and reduces greatly the amount of sinking or heaving of pavers and provides fantastic drainage for behind retaining walls and pools.
